Organizing Roles and Responsibilities

Don't reorganize! In spite of structuring and restructuring the organization and having mission statements for each organizational unit, roles and responsibilities are often still not clear. There are two complicating factors:

  1. There are activities and decisions that cross over organizational boundaries.
  2. When someone says, "I own that", they probably only own some (but not all) aspects of it.

Who owns the rest of it? What is the rest of it? How do you segment ownership and responsibility in a pragmatic, constructive way? There is a way to deal with these two complications effectively.
